Neighbors are concerned that a proposed development near Pumpkin Hill Preserve will increase flooding and make homes vulnerable to fires.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has closed on the purchase of 241 acres on Black Hammock Island, protecting its rare species from development and increasing recreational opportunities on the First Coast.

The nearly 350-acre tract in North Jacksonville had been approved for residential development. Instead, it will be added to the surrounding 35,000 acres that are part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet are expected next week to consider spending $5.8 million to preserve an additional 241 acres in the Pumpkin Hill Creek area in Duval County.
