The fight over putting a half-cent sales tax referendum for school maintenance on the ballot and what it would say has cost more than $200,000 so far. And that’s just what the city has paid for its legal counsel. But we still don’t know how much the school district could be billed by its outside legal advisers — if they’re even billed at all.

The Jacksonville City Council Tuesday night voted down a half-cent sales tax referendum. The vote took place without the public present, after Council President Scott Wilson tossed the audience out for excessive boos.

The Jacksonville City Council and the Duval County Public Schools Board Wednesday met to discuss whether to put a half cent sales tax referendum before voters this year.

After the Duval County School Board’s half-cent sales tax referendum faced a roadblock this week at Tuesday’s Finance and Rules committee meetings, members say they want to take action.

At a meeting Thursday afternoon, Chairwoman Lori Hershey announced to board members that she scheduled a meeting with Jacksonville’s General Counsel Jason Gabriel.
