Homestead Exemption


The Duval County Property Appraiser is cracking down on homestead exemption fraud. 

Wednesday on “First Coast Connect,” we discussed the fallout from the firing of FBI Director James Comey with international experts Ambassador Nancy Soderberg; Ed Coyle, the foreign counterintelligence representative to the Supreme Allied Command Atlantic; and the Division Chief for the Combatting Terrorism Directorate for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Jacksonville United Nations Association Secretary Jill Dawson (1:17). Jacksonville City Councilman Matt Schellenberg (28:00) talked about the Homestead Tax Exemption ballot proposal placed on the November 2018 ballot by the state legislature. The Florida Legislature is considering allowing voters to decide if they want an additional property tax break by increasing the homestead exemption.

The Jacksonville City Council passed a resolution Tuesday, 18-1, urging state lawmakers who represent Jacksonville to oppose the idea. Councilman Reggie Brown voted against the measure.

The Duval Property Appraiser is asking for help cracking down on homestead-exemption fraud.

Homeowners can claim the exemption for their primary residence, and fraud occurs when people claim it on more than one property.
