Hospital administrators on Monday gave House committees a glimpse into the challenges facing health care professionals, describing efforts to re-imagine how care is delivered amid a nursing shortage and sizable financial hit from the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the forefront of the concerns is a shortage of nurses, which the executives told lawmakers has created an emergency for hospital administrators.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration has asked an appeals court to block challenges filed by five school boards against a Department of Health rule aimed at preventing students from being forced to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Florida continued on an upward trend overnight, hitting 18,494 on Saturday morning, an increase of 526, according to the Florida Department of Health.

The number of confirmed deaths reached 438 -- an overnight increase of 19. No new deaths were reported in Northeast Florida counties tracked by News4Jax. A 54-year-old Clay County man became the eighth person to die in the county after contracting COVID-19, the health department reported Friday evening.

The Centers for Disease Control is now recommending that everyone wear a cloth face mask whenever we go anywhere outside our homes. To help make more available, a grassroots movement has launched in Jacksonville to spread awareness about mask-wearing and get more masks into people's hands.
