08/10/16: Beaches Residents React To Pension Proposal; School Dress Codes; Women's Center Of Jax

Beaches Residents React to Pension Proposal

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry says "we're all in this together" regarding the city's pension obligations, but some residents of the Beaches are skeptical.

Curry has been traveling around Duval County drumming up support for his proposed solution to Jacksonville’s massive unfunded pension liability.

But he’s facing a tough sell in Jacksonville, Atlantic and Neptune Beaches, where some residents are pushing back against the idea of extending a half-cent sales tax.

Many are question why should they vote for a half-cent sales tax they seemingly would receive nothing from, to pay for a problem they didn’t contribute to.

Rory Diamond, vice president of the civic organization Beaches Watch, and Jacksonville Beach businessman Jon McGowan join us to discuss this.

School Dress Codes

Is your daughter’s school body shaming her with its dress code policies?

Critics of rules for dress at many American public and private schools say they are perpetuating antiquated, sexist and harmful standards when it comes how female students should dress.

And they cite several highly controversial incidents around the country where girls were ordered to go home and change clothes, even though they were wearing what most would call perfectly acceptable attire.

Supporters of school dress codes, however, say they’re necessary rules and that too many kids are wearing clothes that are too risque for the classroom.

As school prepares to start next week in Duval County, we discuss this controversy surrounding dress codes with Dr. Jenny Stuber, UNF associate professor of sociology.

Women's Center of Jacksonville

It's a new chapter for the Women's Center of Jacksonville.

The organization's annual Celebration of Women event takes place this Friday.

Women's Center executive director Teresa Miles and incoming board president Lise Everly join us with a preview.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
