Sean Shaw

Sean Shaw is a Democrat and state representative from the Tampa area. He’s also the son of Leander Shaw, the state’s first African-American Supreme Court justice.

Shaw said on Tuesday’s First Coast Connect that if elected he will make the attorney general’s office a more activist one. He’s campaigning on taking on the Florida Legislature on a range of issues, including funding education, gun safety and implementing the medical marijuana law in the state.

“Listen, this job is about contentiousness. You’re running to be the people’s lawyer, which means you’re going to have to go after some people. You’re going to have to protect the people from anyone. And I’m gonna make the case that includes the Legislature,” said Shaw.

Shaw is the likely Democratic nominee in the attorney general’s race. Incumbent Pam Bondi is term-limited. In the November general election, he’ll face either former Judge Ashley Moody of Plant City, or Rep. Jay Fant of Jacksonville or Rep. Frank White of Pensacola.

The primary is set for August 28.
