Downtown St. Augustine's Confederate Monument On Agenda At Monday Night's Commission Meeting

Jul 9, 2018

The St. Augustine City Commission meets Monday evening and on the agenda is a presentation by the Confederate Monument Committee.

The monument in the Plaza downtown is a memorial to the Confederate soldiers who fought and died in the Civil War.

The seven member committee has been meeting since February to develop a plan for putting the statue in historical context.

The city commission voted last October to keep the monument and an email to WJCT News from the St. Augustine City Manager sought to underline that decision by refuting what he said was misinformation that had been disseminated through robo calls and media interviews.

In his email, City manager John Regan said the claim that the commission will consider whether to keep or remove the memorial at its Monday meeting is false.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. at City Hall at 75 King Street.
