The FBI will review the police shooting death of 22-year-old Vernell Bing, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams announced Friday.

Bing was unarmed when an officer shot him in the head last month. The shooting happened after Bing crashed a stolen vehicle into the officer’s car following a chase.

Williams said JSO doesn’t usually tell the public about independent reviews, but this case is different.

“Obviously this case has garnered a lot of attention and there’s a lot of questions in the community about the way we investigate shootings,” Williams said. “... So I think with that, the answer to that being an independent review of our investigation is appropriate in this case.”

The FBI, along with the U-S Department of Justice,  will start reviewing after JSO wraps up its own investigation.
