The Gator Bowl is getting a new name and a new game day.
The game will be now called the TaxSlayer Bowl, and will be played on January 2. The game had been played on January 1.
Taxslayer.com President Jimmy Rhodes and President Rick Catlett announced the change Thursday as part of a new six-year sponsorship agreement.
The game will match a team from the Southeastern Conference against either a Big Ten Conference or Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The University of Notre Dame plays in the ACC. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
Rhodes says he recognizes the 70 year tradition of the Gator Bowl and wants to build on the games historic foundation.
