Scholarship Contest for St. Johns County High School Students Launched

Florida Prepaid College Board

St. Johns County high school students have a little over a month to enter an essay contest for a $7,500 legacy scholarship from the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

The scholarship is given in honor of St. Johns County resident and longtime Foundation chairman Duane Ottenstroer and his commitment to public service.

“Mr. Ottenstroer’s lifelong commitment to public service as evidenced through his time on the Florida Prepaid College Board set a strong example for our future generations,” said Board Chairman John Rood in a news release.

“We look forward to helping a young Floridian meet their college goals and follow in his footsteps of giving back to the community and state,” Rood added.

The scholarship requires a 500 word essay on the value of public service and will be awarded to one student who can show a similar desire to give back to the community.

Students must also submit one letter of recommendation from an educator or professional, and a personal essay.

The scholarship contest is open to St. Johns County students in grades nine through 12.  The deadline to apply is March 23rd.
