The City of Tallahassee is encouraging residents to ditch their cars and take public transportation for a spin as part of Florida’s Active Transportation Week.

StarMetro busses waived their fares Thursday as part of the Take a Trip on Transit event.

The City of Tallahassee partnered with the Florida Departments of Health and Transportation to promote walking, biking and public transit as transportation options in the Capital City.

Tallahassee City Commissioner Gil Ziffer says busses are a safer, more efficient alternative to cars.

“We want people to try our bus system," says Ziffer. "The Florida Department of Transporation and Florida Department of Health have teamed up with us because it’s a good safety thing. We were commenting earlier: we were texting, we were Tweeting, we were reading because we’re not driving. And that’s the kind of thing we are trying to instill in people.”

Ziffer was accompanied by American professional stock car racing driver Scott Lagasse Jr. As the spokesman for FDOT's Alert Today Florida campaign, Lagassee aims to increase the public awareness of pedestrian and bicyclist safety and to drive down fatalities on Florida's roadways.
