The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the shooting death Saturday morning of 13 year old Titania Mitchell. Mitchell was reportedly visiting family members at a house in the 11300 block of Riverstone Way when she was shot once. Police have said that Titania was one of five children who were alone in the house at the time of the shooting, and that her death may have been an accident.
Upon learning of the shooting, Duval County School Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti issued a statement extending his sympathy to the family and putting off the start of FCAT testing until Tuesday:
"We've learned that the victim in yesterday's shooting was indeed one of our students, Titania Mitchell, from LaVilla School of the Arts. This is a great loss that we share with the Mitchell family. The incident has weighed on us since we received the news and our continued prayers are directed to the student, family, and community. In an effort to comfort the students and faculty members directly affected by such an enormous tragedy, we have assigned grief counselors and related services to support them. In addition, I requested to delay the start of FCAT testing until Tuesday and the request was approved by the FDOE. It is also our sincere request that members of the media assist us in respecting the family and school community by refraining from any visits to LaVilla School of the Arts for the next two weeks."
