The University of North Florida’s new student recreation center, Field House, is being recognized for its environmentally sustainable construction.

The building received a Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Zak Ovadia, UNF’s director of Campus Planning, Design and Construction, said the designation demonstrates the university’s commitment to the environment.

“It’s right for the environment. We have been very sensitive over the years to what’s happening to the global environmental issues,” Ovadia said.

The building features LED lighting, irrigation efficient landscaping and waterless urinals. It opened in October 2015 and houses the university’s indoor sports program.

The Field House is the 13th UNF building to receive LEED certification.
