The Financial News & Daily Record and the Florida Times-Union are reporting that real estate trust firm SouthEast Holdings has bought the old Barnett Bank and the historic Laura Street Trio buildings in Downtown for $3 million. Financial backing for purchase came from Stache Investments Corp, headed by Jaguars owner Shahid Khan.
According to SouthEast leader Steve Atkins, the Barnett building will be coverted into a university-level education center with student housing. Details on the future of the Trio buildings have yet to be released. The exteriors of all four buildings, which date back to the beginning of last century, will be refurbished.
The group hopes the purchase will help the push for redevelopment in the urban core.
“We intend to roll out a new initiative in the private sector for downtown,” says Atkins. “The last I read, there are close to 3,000 people living downtown. The city has a goal of 10,000, and we want to do everything we can to help.”
