The Florida Department of Transportation is looking for public input on a proposal to close the southbound ramp from Independent Drive to the Main Street Bridge.
According to the FDOT, the city has asked that the ramp be closed because of redevelopment.
Jacksonville City Councilman Robin Lumb said he has already heard from a number of constituents who are worried about the lack of accessibility.
“I certainly wouldn’t favor closing the ramp unless there was another means of access that was provided, " he said. "Maybe one of those switchback structures like they use where the northbank riverwalk crosses the railroad tracks.”
The proposal would route traffic along Independent Drive around the block to Bay Street and then to Main Street southbound. Pedestrians and bicyclists would use Laura Street, Bay Street and Main Street to cross the bridge.
FDOT engineers and city leaders will hold a public hearing on the Main Street Bridge project Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront hotel downtown. The discussion will begin at 4:30, followed by a presentation and public comment period at 6:30.
