Ground broke Tuesday on a new housing development in Jacksonville’s Historic Springfield neighborhood. It’s part of the city’s weeklong celebration of federally funded projects.
The new, 14-unit Dozier Apartments near 8th Street and Main Street will house moderate, low-income, and very-low-income families.
Operation New Hope — a community revitalization nonprofit focused on Springfield and the Eastside — is building the site. It’s using $2.5 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, a $500,000 loan from the Florida Community Loan Foundation, and a $100,000 grant from Wells Fargo Bank.
Mayor Alvin Brown says this kind of public-private partnership is key to urban renewal.
“The private sector is the engine of our community, but government plays a major role in creating the right environment so businesses can develop and thrive,” Brown said.
Since 1975, the City of Jacksonville has received nearly $390 million in HUD grants for community development.
