School grades are due out later this summer in Florida, and superintendents statewide have raised concerns about tougher grading standards and how they'll affect the rankings of their districts' schools.
In response, the State Board of Education is forming a task force to consider possible short- and long-term changes to the system.
Florida Board of Education Chair Gary Chartrand requested the task force.
"We're going through some complex changes as the state shifts to Common Core standards and we need to make sure we take a close look," Chartrand says.
Florida is one of 46 states adopting Common Core for the 2014 school year. Critics have pushed back at the change to the new standards. For his part, Chartrand believes they're a critical component to preparing students for a 21st century economy.
"There will be much more of a focus on critical thinking, for example," he told First Coast Connect this morning.
