06/03/15: Caitlyn Jenner And Transgender Americans; Urban Land Institute; Shannon Miller
Caitlyn Jenner says she is finally free after a Vanity Fair cover photo is shared around the world. The former Bruce Jenner went public with the decision to come out as transgender during an interview with Diane Sawyer in April. Transgender advocates say Jenner’s story is a powerful transformative moment, but they also want to remind people that Jenner’s experience and privilege is not typical. And media covering the transgender movement find themselves entering a new terrain. We speak with Kaitlin Legg, assistant director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center at UNF; Chevara Orrin, founder of the local advocacy group We Are Straight Allies; Kristie Overstreet, licensed sex therapist; and Frank Denton, chief editor at the Florida Times-Union.
The Urban Land Institute’s fourth annual Florida Summit is being held in Ponte Vedra Beach this week. This is the conference where Florida’s sharpest real estate minds and policymakers will meet to discuss top issues facing the state’s real estate market and economy. Event chair Cecilia Bonifay joins us with a preview.
And we speak with decorated Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller about her new book, "It's Not About Perfect: Competing For My Country and Fighting For My Life," detailing her time at the Olympics and her battles with cancer.
