06/17/15: Charlotte's Web Moratorium; Cholesterol Drugs; MOCA Jacksonville And Igersjax

Opposition is growing around the state after the Jacksonville City Council last week passed a moratorium designed to block any operation connected to the low potency strain of medical marijuana known as Charlotte’s Web. Florida families who have children with cancer and epilepsy are advocating the legalization of low-THC marijuana to treat their kids. The Florida Department of Health began accepting applications for low-THC cultivation businesses last week. There will be only five licenses approved, one for each of five different geographic locations in the state. The local moratorium seeks to keep any association with the drug out of this area. We speak with Ryan Wiggins, spokesperson for several Florida families affected by the Charlotte’s Web issue, and Jacksonville mother Jennifer Davis, whose child has epilepsy.

Millions of Americans might have a new option for treatment now that an FDA advisory panel has given a favorable recommendation to a new class of cholesterol-lowering drugs. Jacksonville physician Dr. Michael Koren, one of only two physicians in the world who has authored on both of the Sanofi-Regeneron and the Amgen medications, joins us with more details.

We also preview several events happening at MOCA Jacksonville this summer, including the museum's "Southern Exposure" exhibit and an "Instameet"  gathering for the Jacksonville Instagram community. Denise Reagan, MOCA Jacksonville communications director, and Stefan Stears, the official curator of the @igersjax Instagram account, join us.
