04/13/16: ICARE; Hip Anthroplasty; Lavilla School Of The Arts Opera; 'Peter Pan'

ICARE

The interfaith group ICARE, or Interfaith Coalition for Action, Reconciliation and Empowerment, held its 2016 Nehemiah Assembly Monday night.

The group pressed city and community leaders, including Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry, Sheriff Mike Williams, and Duval County Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti, to address a variety of issues. Their four areas of focus: wealth building in Northwest Jacksonville; reopening the homeless day resource center; ex-offender re-entry and restorative justice and civil citations.

Curry pushed back, saying that the city's pension woes are the reason City Hall can't fund programs to address these problems.

We discuss ICARE's push to find solutions with three of its memebers: Father Hugh Chapman, Pastor Phillip Baber  and the Reverend Bruce Havens.

Hip Anthroplasty

Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute are the first in north Florida and southeast Georgia region offering MAKOplasty Hip Arthroplasty.

This technology is the latest innovation in total hip replacement surgery performed using the RIO system, a highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic arm that enables the accurate alignment and positioning of implants.

Dr. Stephen Lucie, orthopedic surgeon with Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute and Baptist Health, joins us with more about the procedure.

Lavilla School of the Arts

This week, Lavilla School of the Arts vocal students will debut a full-length opera titled "Jared: A Tale of Freedom, Control and Choice."

Loosely based on "Don Giovanni," the opera was entirely written and composed by the 12- and 14-year-old students.

We hear more about the show from Shawn Pendry, faculty project director, and cast members Jeremy Goodson and Nadia Nightingale.

'Peter Pan'

We preview Christ Episcopal Church's new production of "Peter Pan" with writer and director Jason Woods.

The cast of "Peter Pan" also joins us with a live in-studio performance.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
