UNF Poll on Pension, HRO
A new poll shows Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry has some work to do to build support for the pension tax referendum Duval County voters will decide this summer.
The new poll from UNF's Public Opinion Research Laboratory says 36 percent of local residents support the idea, with 24 percent opposed. Forty percent of respondents said they have no opinion on the matter.
At the same time, a big plurality supports HRO expansion in the city on the grounds of “sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression," with 64 percent of voters in favor and 26 percent opposed.
We discuss the results of this poll with UNF professor of political science Dr. Michael Binder, director of the school's Public Opinion Research Laboratory.
Better Speech and Hearing Month
A recent study by John Hopkins University shows that treating hearing loss aggressively may help stave off cognitive decline and dementia.
Two thirds of Americans suffering from hearing loss by the time they reach age 70, so hearing services are crucial to lowering the incidence of dementia.
At the same time, treating children who have speech or language disorders has been show to have a positive impact on society. For every dollar spent on treatment, schools save nearly $10 on remedial education.
