05/13/16: First Coast Connect On The Go! Live From The Players Championship

PLAYERS Championship Leadership

We broadcast live from the third day of the 2016 PLAYERS Championship.

Matt Rapp, executive director of The PLAYERS, and Michele McManamon, tournament chairman, join us with a look at what's new this year and everything that goes into making the tournament happen.

Volunteers

We speak with PLAYERS Championship volunteer Mary Sullivan about the work she and the other roughly 2,000 volunteers do every year at the tournament.

Donna Deegan

More than 1,600 racers gathered for the annual THE PLAYERS Donna 5K lastt weekend at TPC Sawgrass, where participants were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the tournament preparations.

Runners and walkers were welcome to join the cause, starting near the island green of the Stadium Course’s 17th hole and following a cart path through the nine back holes to raise funds for breast cancer research and treatment.

The 5K run at THE PLAYERS is part of year-long efforts focused on the foundation’s annual 26.2 with Donna national marathon as an extension to The Donna Foundation’s ongoing fight to end breast cancer.

Donna Deegan joins us to discuss these efforts.

'For The Glory'

In 1981, the film Chariots of Fire won four Oscars, including Best Picture.  Its sweeping instrumental theme song by Vangelis went on to become synonymous with Olympic glory.

And its story of two talented runners - Harold Abrahams running for personal glory, Eric Liddell to glorify God - continues to captivate.

The real Liddell’s Olympic triumph was only part of a great, epic story of faith and resilience.

After winning his Olympic medal in 1924 in Paris, Liddell became a missionary in China. Tragically, his final, brave years were spent in horrendous conditions in a Japanese work camp during World War II.

It’s that portion of Liddell’s life that sports writer and author Duncan Hamilton explores in his new book, For the Glory: Eric Liddell's Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr.

Hamiliton joins us with more about the story.

Duval Arts

Next week, more than 450 elementary, middle, and high school students will get together and perform at the Times-Union Center.

The students will share dance, music, and theatre performances for their families and the Jacksonville community at the first-ever Celebration of the Arts event.

Jeff Smith, director of arts with Duval County Public Schools, joins us with a preview.

Trasca & Co

The PLAYERS Championship is an event where you can not only see some world-class golfers, but also mix and mingle, and sample some great food and drinks at the same time.

It's called the “Taste of Jax,” and it is located in between 11th green and 12th tee.

Featuring favorite Jacksonville restaurants Indochine, Metro Diner and Pele’s Wood Fire, the new venue features open seating in an air-conditioned environment.

One new dining option this year at Taste of Jax is the Ponte Vedra restaurant Trasca & Co. Eatery.

Trasca co-owner Sara Frasca joins us with a taste of their offerings this year.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
