10/3/2016: BioFlorida; Betty Griffin Center; TEACH Conference; Cole Pepper

A conference next week in Jacksonville brings together members of the life science industry. First Coast Connect host Melissa Ross spoke with RS&H vice president Jonathan Cantor, who is also the chair of the BioFlorida conference. To commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month we heard from Betty Griffin Center development director MalindaEverson. WJCT’s annual TEACH conference is Saturday at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Jacksonville. We spoke with honorary TEACH chair Dr. Susan Syverudif about the conference and how it can benefit local educators. Cole Pepper joined us to discuss the sports news of the weekend including the Jaguars win over the Colts London.

About 83,000 Floridians are employed in the biopharmaceutical, medical technology and bioagriculture sectors. BioFlorida represents nearly 6.000 businesses and research organizations in the field of life sciences. Cantor talked about the importance of the growing field on the state’s economy.

Betty Griffin Center

Some changes have been announced at the Betty Griffin House, the domestic abuse emergency shelter in St. Johns County. The name has been changed to the Betty Griffin Center to highlight that it provides more to victims of domestic abuse than a place to stay. Everson told Ross they have many programs, including those to help perpetrators break their cycle of violence and abuse.

TEACH conference

The TEACH conference brings together teachers from around the First Coast to talk about education and the issues teachers face in the classroom everyday. Syverud spoke with Ross about history of the event and how teachers can participate.

Cole Pepper

The Jacksonville Jaguars finally have a game in the win column after beating the Indianapolis Colts Sunday in London. Pepper also talked with Ross about the Florida Gators narrow win, disappointing losses for Florida State and Georgia, as well as the latest news about the Armada.
