12/7/2016: Medicare Deadline; 100 Plates; Girls Scouts And Jaguars; Wine On The River

Wednesday on First Coast Connect we spoke with Oliver Formato, sales director for Humana Marketpoint, on the deadline for seniors to file for any changes in their Medicare coverage. We also spoke with artist Kedgar Volta and Denise Reagan of Brunet-Garcia about Volta’s display being unveiled during Art Walk bringing awareness of hunger on the First Coast. The Girl Scouts of Gateway Council CEO Mary Anne Jacobs told us about Sunday’s cookie selling kickoff with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and iHeartMedia Regional Event Director Candace Price joined us by phone to talk about Saturday’s inaugural Wine on the River event to benefit Hands on Jacksonville.

Medicare Deadline

The annual Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plan enrollment deadline is Wednesday. More than 55 million Americans are enrolled, though President-elect Donald Trump has said he'd like to "modernize" the program. Formato discussed some of the different plans that are available and how they can be used to meet the individual needs of seniors.

100 Plates

It’s an interactive installation that brings awareness to the struggles of hunger in America and demonstrates the power of giving. Hunger is not only a Third World problem; it’s happening right here in our community.

The Brunet-García Advertising Agency and Feeding Northeast Florida present “100 Plates,” to show how more than 100 thousand people in our area live with food insecurity, one of the highest rates in Florida.

The exhibit will premiere from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday during Art Walk at the Jesse Ball duPont Center.

Girl Scouts And Jaguars

The Girls Scouts of Gateway Council is holding its annual Cookie Kickoff with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Sunday at Met Park in downtown Jacksonville. Nearly 1,500 Girl Scouts and family members will celebrate the start of cookie season with cookie-related programs and activities that reinforce the skills they learn by selling cookies. The event will also provide lunch and entertainment before heading over to the Jags game against the Vikings. 2017 also marks the 100th year of Girl Scouts selling cookies, and a new cookie Girl Scout S’mores is being introduced.

Wine On the River

TheWine on the River event will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Fountain and on the Southbank Riverwalk. It’s modeled after the Wine on the River event in Nashville event now in its 14th year.  The “World Tour” theme will highlight wines from various regions across the globe. All attendees will receive a souvenir wine glass and passport designating the various regions. Tickets cost $45 in advance and $55 the day of the event.
