9/1/2017: Media Roundtable; K9s United; Jenni Reid
Friday on “First Coast Connect,” guest host Ryan Benk led our weekly Media Roundtable with panelists Florida Times-Union reporter Dan Scanlan, Folio Weekly Editor Claire Goforth, Florida Politics reporter A.G. Gancarski and Jacksonville Business Journal Editor Timothy Gibbons (01:07). We spoke with K9s United Executive Director Eric Heineman about his organization and how the upcoming Spanish Wine Festival in St. Augustine (39:51) will benefit it, and Jacksonville musician Jenni Reid performed live in Studio 5 (48:36).
Our panel talked about the political upheaval in Atlantic Beach as the mayor and two City Council members were voted out of office this week. They also discussed the Duval County School Board’s voting to join at least 10 other districts in a lawsuit against the state over a controversial new education law, and the Florida Supreme Court’s siding with Gov. Rick Scott over his decision to pull cases from Central Florida State Attorney Aramis Ayala after she said she would not seek the death penalty any more.
K9s United raises funds for police K9 units. The nonprofit is looking for donations to help Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office K9 officer Jeremy Mason, who was shot by a robbery suspect in July. K9s United is one of the organizations that will benefit from next weekend’s Spanish Wine Festival in St. Augustine. Since the festival was established it has raised $325,000 for local charities.
Reid is releasing a new album, “Radio Silence,” next Saturday. She has performed with several well-known artists, including Tyler Hilton, We The Kings and Andy Grammer. She also toured with “American Idol” contestant Josiah Lemming. Reid is also an actress who appeared on the TV show “One Tree Hill.”
