Friday on “First Coast Connect,” we had our weekly Media Roundtable. David Bauerlein from The Florida Times Union, Folio Weekly editor Claire Goforth and Jacksonville Business Journal editor Timothy Gibbons (01:46) took part.
We heard about the upcoming Sulzbacher Center’s “Transformations” event with co-chair Darnell Smith and Sulzbacher Chief Development Officer Eileen Briggs (40:41)
We also spoke with the editor in chief of the new local publication, Salty at Heart, Kirstin Thompson (47:25).
Media Roundtable
Our panel discussed the release of the full video of Jacksonville Council Members Reggie Gaffney and Katrina Brown’s confrontation with police last month. The Duval County School Board says changes in state testing may lead to lower graduation rates and we heard about Carvana, the car vending machine you may have seen near the I-95, Butler Blvd. intersection.
Transformations
There are thousands of people in Jacksonville who have no one to turn to, no one who is able to help them when a crisis occurs in their lives.
Every day, Sulzbacher Center is home to more hundreds of homeless members of our community, many of whom are children. But Sulzbacher offers more than a night’s lodging and a hot meal. They’re a place for reinventing lives and for restoring hope. They help people in need find the way home. The annual “Restorations” event highlights those who have been able to turn their lives around and find housing and employment.
Salty At Heart
It’s a new publication here on the First Coast, with a mission to promote equality and sustainability worldwide as well as serve as a space for women to be heard.
Salty at Heart features everything from female scientists and artists, to humanitarians, environmentalists, surfers, and adventurers from across the globe. It is sea inspired and dripping with witty art, stories, and interviews from people making a positive difference in the world.
