Safer Streets Summit

Studies have shown that Jacksonville can be a very dangerous place for pedestrians and bicyclists. A report released in January by the National Complete Streets Coalition ranked the Jacksonville metropolitan area the 4th most dangerous place in the nation for pedestrians.

On Oct. 25, the North Florida TPO will be hosting its first-ever Safer Streets Summit. It’s part of of the organization’s long range transportation update 2045 plan, which will start in early 2018. North Florida TPO is doing extensive public outreach, including surveys and asking many organizations in the six-county area to take part.

Editorial disclosure: North Florida TPO is an underwriter for First Coast Connect.

‘Moveable Feast’- Smokin D’s BBQ

They’re getting rave reviews and lines out the door for their authentic, fresh-smoked barbecue.

In the latest Moveable Feast, our look at dining and hospitality trends across the First Coast, Leigh Cort of the Women’s Food Alliance talks with Cameron Perritt of Smokin D’s BBQ in St. Augustine.

According to a recent international survey, 70% of Americans would prefer to be self-employed and a new home-based business is started every 12 seconds. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, 99% of all new jobs in this country created in last decade were from self- employed individuals and one-third of everyone who works in the US is moonlighting.

Richter quit her job working for NASA as a marketing executive to pursue the American dream of owning her own business. It was through that experience that she saw first-hand the difficulties of small business ownership. After 12 years of success, she is now on a mission to inspire one million people to redefine what success looks like for them and to flip the national small business failure rate of 80% upside down to achieve a success rate of 80% or better.

Seniors After Irma

Hurricane Irma was hard on all of us, but especially tough on this area’s seniors.

ElderSource has worked hard to help this area’s seniors during and after the storm.

The organization is holding its Grandparent’s Day, noon to  4.p.m., Sunday at the Jacksonville Historical Society across from the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. It was rescheduled from September due to Hurricane Irma.

The event is free and open to the public, with activities designed to bring multi generations together.
