1/23/2018: W.T. Hogarth; Teen Suicide Prevention; Generous Pours; Mapping Our Past

The Florida Institute of Oceanography

Tuesday on First Coast Connect we spoke with UNF professor Dr. Jim Gelsleichter about the research vessel W.T. Hogarth that he and some students will be using this spring for ocean research (01:12).

We heard about an event this weekend at the University of North Florida to prevent teen suicides with UF Health Jacksonville Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Allison Ventura (26:35).

Generous Pours founder Ellen Cottrill told us about this week’s fundraiser at HOBNOB for Feeding Northeast Florida (35:02).

Jacksonville Public Library Special Collections Manager Laura Minor and Antiques Roadshow appraiser Christopher Lane told us about an event this weekend highlighting the library’s map collection (46:00).

W.T Hogarth

Florida is surrounded by ominously rising seas. UNF is trying to get ahead of what’s happening when it comes to the realities of climate change by training a new generation of marine scientists.

From studying climate change to following shark populations off the First Coast, UNF students have spent years studying the ocean. Now, they have a new research vessel to use for their studies. The W.T. Hogarth was christened last spring by the Florida Institute of Oceanography.

On Thursday, UNF students will be taking tours of the vessel ahead of using it for research this spring. The vessel will not be open for public tours but it will be docked near the Hyatt Hotel downtown.

Teen Suicide Prevention

It’s known in the medical community as a silent epidemic: youth depression and suicide.   Eleven percent of teens experience depression, and one in five teens considers suicide.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States.

This Saturday, January 27, a free seminar will be held for medical professionals to educate themselves about the problem and how to better help young people who are struggling. It’s free and open to the public but organizers request you pre-register.

Generous Pours

Generous Pours is a happy hour event that rotates around several prominent restaurants and locations  around Jacksonville to raise funds for various non-profit organizations. On Friday, from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m., the latest Generous Pours will be held at HOBNOB in Brooklyn. Upcoming Generous Pours will be held Feb. 8 at Candy Apple Cafe and Feb.22 at Moxie Kitchen. Both of those happy hours run from 5 p.m.to 7 p.m. and all  will be raising funds for Feeding Northeast Florida.

Mapping Our Past

It’s a special opportunity this weekend to delve into this area’s history.

The Jacksonville Public Library is hosting an event called Mapping Our Past. It will spotlight the library’s Lewis Ansbacher Map Collection.

Antiques Roadshow appraiser Christopher Lane will be discussing Geographic Myths of the American Southeast. The event is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Downtown Main Public Library.
