Come to WJCT's Black Party in Five Points at 8 pm to hear David Luckin and Electro Lounge!

On Friday First Coast Connect was live from Derby on Park in Five Points to kick off WJCT’s Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall Block Party. Stop by Friday to hear the music playing.      

We heard from WJCT President and CEO David McGowan and Derby on Park co-owners and chefs Jonathan Cobbs and Dwayne Beliakoff along with Director of Events and Catering for Bread and Board and Derby on Park Laura Edgecombe about the block party (01:37).

Our weekly Media Roundtable featured David Bauerlein from The Florida Time-Union, WJCT Contributor Charles Griggs, Jacksonville Business Journal editor Timothy Gibbons and Florida Politics reporter A.G. Gancarski (9:48).

Stories discussed included:   

  • Local political guru Susie Wiles has been named campaign chair for the Ron DeSantis campaign for Governor.
  • The Georgia nuclear power plant project Plant Vogle will continue despite objections by JEA that it is still obligated to continue with its share of the project after massive cost overruns.
  • The Army Corp of Engineers was awarded a $210 million contract for the second phrase of the dredging project in the St. Johns River.
  • A lawsuit challenging Jacksonville City Councilman Terrance Freeman’s eligibility to hold his seat was dismissed.

Returning to the block party, we spoke to three business people from Five Points, Gunnell Humphries, owner of Edge City, Lindsey Hamilton with Sun-Ray Cinema and Kelly Pickard, co-owner of Alewife and President of the Five Points Merchants Association (35:49).    

We spoke with HGTV’s John Gidding, who is hosting the new version of Trading Spaces on the network. He’s in Jacksonville this weekend for The Home and Patio Show.

We heard more about the WJCT Block Party with Station Manager David Luckin,who will be broadcasting The Electro Lounge live from Five Points Friday night beginning at 8 p.m.(46:00).
