Wednesday, February 12, on First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross, we discussed why President Trump’s proposed federal budget is good news for Jacksonville port.
JAXPORT announced it's expecting $93 million in federal spending to deepen the St. Johns River. The project is meant to attract heavier cargo container ships loaded with more goods from growing markets in Asia and beyond. David Bauerlein from the Florida Times-Union joined us to discuss the development. Bauerlein also explained Mayor Lenny Curry’s proposed board members for JEA.
In Going Green, David C. Weindorf, professor and BL Allen Endowed Chair of Pedology at the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University, joined us to discuss his work with local students. Weindorf has spent time at Jacksonville’s Episcopal School giving guidance on its climate change program. He worked in collaboration with Episcopal student Julia Kagiliery on his most recent research.
Leadership Jacksonville has a program for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as interns and young professionals between the ages of 18 and 30 years old called Next Generation. The program encourages rising leaders to invest their careers in the Northeast Florida community by trying to foster interest and participation in the city’s current challenges. Leadership Jacksonville’s Youth Programs Director Meg Folds gave us details. The program will be accepting applications through April 6, 2020.
The Jax Harmony Chorus sang to wrap up the show. Member Susan Brookes told us about the group as well as their singing valentines.
