Professors from the University of North Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville have formed a coalition of academics to work with other local advocates to ask the mayor and City Council to pass the “People’s Budget” for Jacksonville.
The “People’s Budget,” presented by the Jacksonville Community Action Committee, implores the city to divert 50% of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s budget to invest in social services and infrastructure.
The pland would city divert funds to fire and rescue, public works, libraries, parks and recreations, neighborhood investment, mental health funding, and transportation. The group asks the city to reallocate $20 million and $15.5 million to funding for the Kids Hope Alliance and to address community members experiencing homelessness, respectively.
Angela Mann, associate professor at UNF, reacted to Gov DeSants’s proposed legislation to curb “disorderly assemblies.” She also discussed the budget, wealth disparities between Black and white communities, and disproportionate incarceration for Black community members.
The Choice 2020

A new, chemotherapy-free lung cancer treatment is available through the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. John Vu, a medical oncologist at the cancer center, joined us to discuss the treatment.
Selfies for Change
According to Jessica Scott, Public Relations Strategist for TIAA Bank, the bank and the Jacksonville Jaguars are “teaming up with fans to tackle social injustice.” Each game day, a new Jaguars player will take virtual selfies with fans who can unlock donations to organizations fighting for justice.
