The South often gets the Hollywood treatment, but movies often get the region wrong.
Ben Beard, author of The South Never Plays Itself, takes readers on a celluloid trip through Hollywood’s longtime fascination with the South in his new book. He examines the way movies tell the region’s stories.

Beard spoke with us about it

Resiliency & Environmental Justice.

City Hall is getting serious about resiliency, which is good news as our coastal city faces impacts from climate change and sea level rise. Part of becoming more resilient includes understanding environmental justice.

The Environmental Protection Agency defines environmental justice as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, without discrimination, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. This is especially important in Jacksonville, where environmental racism has affected generations of families living in predominantly black and brown neighborhoods.

Josh Gellers, Ph.D., LEED Green Associate, is presenting Friday to the Jacksonville City Council Special Committee on Resilience, along with the EPA. The committee will meet at City Hall on Friday to discuss appointing a Chief Resilience Officer for the city—a position many other coastal cities have had in place for years.

Gellers joined us to discuss his key recommendations to Jacksonville's City Council.

Jumbo Shrimp Go Triple-A

The Miami Marlins have extended the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp an opportunity to become the club’s Triple-A affiliate, beginning with the 2021 season.

This will be the first time that Jacksonville will field a Triple-A baseball team since 1968 when it was affiliated with the New York Mets. Jacksonville’s current affiliation with the Marlins dates back to 2009.

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp owner and CEO Ken Babby joined us with more on what this means for the Crustacean Nation.

Audio Void

As Jacksonville continues to loom large in popular music, Audio Void is turning up the volume on the beautiful sounds coming out of Northeast Florida.

The program, brought to you by Void Magazine, is a part of the Jacksonville Music Experience. Editor Matt Shaw told us more about three Duval County artists making noise on the national stage.
