Hate Groups On The First Coast; LIFTJAX; Going Green; Florida House

The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated the Proud Boys as a hate group. Here a Proud Boys member stands in front of a counter protester at a 2020 Portland, Org. rally.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there are dozens of active hate groups in the state of Florida, including seven in Duval County alone.

The Jacksonville City Council held a workshop on the subject last week. It was led by City Council Member LeAnna Cumber, who says it's important for the city's elected leaders and residents to be aware of hate groups and how hate symbols are being mainstreamed. She joined us to tell us more.

Jacksonville's Eastside

LIFTJAX is a new group in the city dedicated to fighting poverty on Jacksonville's Eastside.  David Garfunkel is the president of LIFTJAX, and says his organization’s goal is to finally break generational poverty in the city, one neighborhood at a time. He joined us to explain how in more detail.

Going Green

The city of Jacksonville plans to host a series of public engagement workshops on sea level rise and coastal flooding. The goal of the workshops, which are being hosted by the city’s Planning and Development Department, is to increase public awareness of various neighborhoods’ vulnerability to sea level rise and flooding and to get input from the community on priorities for flood mitigation strategies. WJCT News’ Brendan Rivers told us more about it.

Florida House

Florida House is the only embassy of its kind for any state in the union, making it a unique attraction in Washington D.C. Two local trustees, Martha Barrett and Mike Hightower, joined us to tell us more about it, and their current efforts surrounding it.
