Postcards from Jacksonville residents that will be sent to Orlando shooting victims and families

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry’s "Dear Orlando" postcard initiative is in full swing, and organizers have already seen an overwhelming response.

Next week is the deadline for those who visit any of Jacksonville's public libraries to share condolences with Orlando residents still grieving from last month’s Pulse Nightclub shootings.

At the downtown public library, a 4 inch stack of the cards are waiting to be distributed to victims and families. Chris Boivin, an assistant director at the library, has been collecting the cards.

“‘You are loved, known, and always deserving of respect. Strength and peace to you during this time,’” one reads.

Another says: “‘My thoughts and prayers are with you every day. We as a country are a family, and someday this hatred will end.’”

One is from a mother who also lost a child. “I am a mother who has sent a child into 'dangerous' parts of the world. My heart grieves with you.”

About 300 cards have come in so far, and they’re from visitors of all ages. The content ranges from thoughtful prose to children’s heartfelt scribbles. Besides a show of solidarity, the cards are also a way for residents to process the tragedy and heal, according to Boivin.

Blank postcards are available at all 21 branches of the Jacksonville Public Library. They will be collected until July 26 and are expected to be delivered to Orlando in time for the International Day of Friendship.
