A $10.7 million construction project is scheduled to start April 20 on Cassat Avenue, according the Florida Department of Transportation.
The top to bottom overhaul includes resurfacing and replacing the JEA water main along with adding new service connections.
The I-10 bridge pier protection wall will also be relocated. Crosswalks will be redone to meet to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.
Countdown pedestrian timers will be installed and on-street parking will be removed on a major portion of Cassat Avenue.
One southbound travel lane on Cassat Avenue from San Juan Avenue to Blanding Boulevard will be removed to allow for the addition of buffered bicycle lanes while maintaining existing on-street parking, according to FDOT.
The project also includes eliminating the northbound right turn lanes to Post Street and Lenox Avenue.
The overhaul will include lane closures and at times could require total detours of Cassat Avenue between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.
Cassat Avenue’s reconstruction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019.
Meanwhile, the $10.7 rehabilitation of the Main Street Bridge has been completed.
Several major mechanical components were replaced along with the entire electrical control system, according to FDOT.
Other updates to the bridge included replacement of the traffic gates, sidewalk gates, a lightning protection system, and closed-circuit television cameras that give operators live views of traffic conditions.
