The peak of hurricane season has arrived although the Atlantic has been unusually quiet.
Florida Public Radio Meteorologist Cyndee O'Quinn says that could be changing soon.
“Long range models in the Atlantic are showing a series of waves coming off the coast of Africa next week. Though no development is expected through the next 5 days, the season is showing signs of coming alive,” says O’Quinn.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30.
O’Quinn said the peak is September 10, with two-thirds of storm activity typically occurring between August 20 and October 10.
Three devastating storms struck the Southern U.S. during that window last year:
- Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on August 25.
- Hurricane Irma came ashore in Florida on September 10.
- Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico September 20.
They’re right up there with Katrina in 2005 and Sandy in 2012 as the five costliest hurricanes in U-S history.
