The state plans to start collecting tolls on the initial segment of the First Coast Expressway next month.
When it’s complete, the 46-mile expressway will connect I-10 in Duval County with I-95 in St. Johns County.
Sara Pleasants with the Florida Department of Transportation said, starting in mid-July, five electronic gantries will scan SunPass transponders and photograph license plates between New World Avenue and Blanding Boulevard in Jacksonville.
“There are two segments on the north end that are 20 cents each with a SunPass and 45 cents each with toll-by-plate. And then the three southern segments are 60 cents each with a SunPass and 85 cents each with toll-by-plate,” she said.
That adds up to $2.20 with a SunPass or $3.45 without one to travel the entire length of the expressway. Plus, motorists without a SunPass will be billed another $2.50 a month to cover the cost of processing and mailing.
“July will be here before we know it, so we encourage motorists to buy their SunPasstransponders and get their accounts set up now to ensure they pay the lowest rate possible when tolling begins,” FDOT District Two Secretary Greg Evans said in an email to WJCT News.
Work got underway this spring on the second phase of the expressway between Blanding Boulevard and County Road 209 in Clay County.
Work on the third and final phase connecting C.R. 209 with I-95 in St. Johns County is set to begin in 2023.
