Friday afternoon Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry advised residents to use the holiday weekend to prepare for Hurricane Dorian.
For those heading to the Beaches, the mayor also had a warning. “Stay out of the ocean. If you’re going to be on the beach, enjoy it. But stay out of the water.” Curry said that also applies to experienced swimmers because the experts tell him, “the rip currents are going to be really nasty.”

Curry said the biggest long term threat at this point for Jacksonville will be flooding since tide levels are up and significant rain is expected.
Unlike some neighboring counties, the mayor said the City of Jacksonville will not be offering sandbags. He advised residents that think they may need them to head to their local hardware store.
Superintendent Diana Greene confirmed Friday night football games would still be played as scheduled, although all district sponsored activities throughout the weekend have been cancelled.
Greene said it was too early to determine whether any school closures will be needed next week. She advised students and parents to download the Duval County Public Schools app and check the district’s webpage for updates.
