It’s been a great week for Jacksonville-area high school girls soccer.
So far, three of the five teams that made it to this week’s state championships in Deland are coming home with the trophy.
2-A St. Johns Country Day shut out Shorecrest Prep 4-0; The Bolles School beat Lake Highland Prep 4-3 for the 3-A championship, and it was the Bishop Kenny Crusaders over the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs 2-1 in the 4-A match-up.
Crusaders’ head coach Tom Devenny said it was a huge upset. “Cardinal Gibbons was the number one 4-A team in the state and they were ranked 7th in the nation. Bishop Kenny, we were ranked 6th in the state and I think at that time we were 64th in the nation.”
The Ash Wednesday win was the Jacksonville Catholic high school’s first state championship, Devenny said.
5-A Ponte Vedra also made it to state, but lost their championship game against Archbishop McCarthy 2-0 Friday afternoon.
The 7A championship game between Bartram Trail and Cypress Bay is Friday night at 7 p.m.
