A Jacksonville native has taken command of the USS Minnesota.

Cmdr. Brad Bozin became the Virginia-class submarine’s skipper during a change of command ceremony Tuesday at Flasher World War II Memorial in Groton, Conn.

“I couldn’t be more excited, the boat’s in excellent shape,” Bozin said in a U.S. Navy news release. “Minnesota’s been performing extremely well and doing nothing but great things.”

The Minnesota is homeported at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton.

Bozin joins the submarine after completing a tour at the Pentagon. He relieved Cmdr. Thomas Flaherty, a native of Buffalo, N.Y.

The Minnesota and crew operate under SUBRON 4. SUBRON 4’s mission is to man, train and equip sailors assigned to fast attack submarines to ensure that they are combat ready.
