Duval Doctors Stress Importance Of Flu Shots To Avoid 'Twindemic'

Doctors say getting a flu shot is more important now than ever before as coronavirus and the flu threaten a simultaneous “twindemic.”

On the First Coast, the Duval County Medical Society Foundation aims to get at least 48% of adults vaccinated against the flu this year through its FluVaxJax campaign.

The society says Northeast Florida has an adult-vaccination rate of just under 14% so far, though this year is already outpacing last year.

Overall, more than 117,000 vaccines have been provided to all age groups, compared to nearly 80,000 at this same time last year.

FluVaxJax also provides a form on its website for people who don’t have insurance to sign up for a free flu shot.

The initiative is a partnership of local health-care providers, pharmacies, health insurance companies, health departments and the city of Jacksonville; it was launched earlier this month.
