Smartphone App For Toll Roads Launches In Florida

Florida Department of Transportation
Motorists that used the roll road express lanes on I-295 in Jacksonville can now use the GoToll smartphone app to pay for the tolls.

First Coast area drivers who use Florida’s toll roads but don’t want to worry about those transponders that go on the windshield now have another option.

The GoToll app for Android and iPhone added Florida to its list of states Monday. Instead of using transponders to document when drivers pass through toll lanes, the GoToll system uses  smartphones' GPS to track trips in real time.

But don't worry if you leave your phone at home. Users who register and set up payment with the app can still be  recorded and billed.

"It's perfect for folks who don't drive toll roads on a regular basis. We're really targeting the casual toll road user," said Elisa Bell, Director of Mobile Technology at Transurban, which developed the app.

That added convenience will cost you. GoToll charges an 85 cent service fee per trip on top of the regular tolls collected by the Florida Department of Transportation.

According to the GoToll website, the app will work with the following toll roads in Florida:
