City Council Considers $8.6M To Redevelop Baptist Convention Center

Jacksonville City Hall
BRENDAN RIVERS / WJCT NEWS

Jacksonville’s City Council will meet Tuesday to consider the redevelopment of the Florida Baptist Convention Building and the Old Federal Reserve Building.

Developers JWB Real Estate Capital could receive as much as $8.6 million in investment incentives, mostly in the form of historic preservation loans that are forgivable.

The plan is to redevelop the buildings into mixed use spaces that include residential units, restaurant or retail space, and 9,000-square-feet of event space.

City Council is also expected to approve a $225,000 contract with Quench The Violence, an Edgewood nonprofit focused on violence prevention. The grant is to support young people ages 18 to 25 who are unemployed or under-employed, or who have been involved in the criminal justice system, with the emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills and job training they need to succeed.

The program was selected for potential funding by City Council’s Special Committee on Social Justice and Community Investment.

Also on City Council’s agenda is approving the purchase of a King Street house as part of the McCoy’s Creek restoration. If the bill is approved, the city will purchase the home for $117,000, at which time the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services will become responsible for it.

City Council meets Tuesdays at 5 p.m. at City Hall. The meetings are streamed online.
