St. Simons Island, Ga., is serving as a location shoot this week for the upcoming Netflix series, Pieces of Her, which is based on the novel by the same name written by Karin Slaughter. Toni Collette stars in the show.
The Glynn County Board of Commissioners said the crew was filming Wednesday morning on Mallery Street from Kings Way to the pier. The crew also shot footage on St. Simons Island Tuesday.
The show's casting company was hiring 25 extras, ages 50 and older, for Tuesday's shoot and three extras with cars and five elderly pedestrian extras for Wednesday’s shoot. The shoots were for exterior retirement community scenes.
Pieces of Her is also shooting some scenes in Savannah.
The series is a thriller-style drama, which Netflix summarizes as follows:
When an afternoon outing explodes into violence, a young woman's view of her mother is forever changed.
Besides Collette, the cast of Pieces of Her includes Bella Heathcote, David Wenham, Terry O'Quinn, Jessica Barden, Calum Worthy, Joe Dempsie and Jacob Scipio.
Collette, a Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe winner, will play Laura Oliver, the mother with a mysterious past life. On the surface, Laura is "seemingly the perfect Southern woman, devoted to her work as a speech pathologist and to her disaffected daughter, Andy," according to Netflix.
Netflix has committed to eight one-hour episodes for the first season of Pieces of Her. No release date has been announced, but Netflix anticipates either a late 2021 or a "100%" chance of a premiere in 2022. The Pieces of Her production schedule has faced coronavirus-related production delays.
Although the series is doing some filming in Georgia, Netflix said Sydney, Australia, is the series' production location.
The show is set in a beachside town. According to the Pieces of Her book, "Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother Laura. She’s knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle."
Georgia's Film Office says 10 feature films, 11 TV series and 15 TV reality shows are currently being shot in the Peach State, including Marvel's Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever and NBC's Dangerous Moms.
