Clay adds recycling drop-off site, but no decision on curbside pick-up

Clay County is adding an additional recycling drop-off site in Middleburg, but there are no answers yet for when curbside recycling might resume.

The new site is at Omega Park, at 4317 County Road 218. It will be open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week, beginning Friday.

Although Jacksonville resumed curbside pick-up this week, the service has remained suspended in Clay since August, two months before Jacksonville stopped it.

The reasons were the same as in Jacksonville: a nationwide shortage of workers caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Jacksonville says its contractors now have enough employees to resume service, the situation has not improved in Clay.

Clay County's contractor, Waste Management, needs 42 licensed commercial drivers but fell 15 short at last count. Waste Management is offering a $10,000 signing bonus in an attempt to recruit workers in Clay County

Clay also is studying how to change the program to make it viable, including the possibility of alternating yard waste and recycling pickup. Another option is eliminating curbside pickup entirely and making drop-off sites permanent.

Results of the study are expected in May. For now, these are the drop-off sites in Clay County:
