Decision could come by Thursday on Mike Williams' status as sheriff

Sheriff Mike Williams moved to Nassau County, raising questions about whether he remains sheriff.

City Council President Sam Newby has agreed to extend the deadline to Thursday for a potentially momentous legal opinion on whether Sheriff Mike Williams vacated that office when he moved a year ago to Nassau County.

Newby had set a deadline by close of business Wednesday for General Counsel Jason Teal to issue his opinion. At Teal's request, Newby agreed to move the deadline to 2 p.m. Thursday.

"I want to get it right," Newby said, adding it's only a few hours more and will be the final deadline.
