Naval Station Mayport moved closer to partial reprieve from wholesale ship losses as the U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to save five littoral combat ships from decommissioning next year.

Three or four Mayport-based LCS could still be decommissioned next year if the version of the National Defense Authorization Act approved by the House becomes final as the Pentagon’s 2023 budget.

That would be disruptive to the base but less drastic than the budget Navy officials recommended in March, which would have decommissioned eight Freedom-variant LCS at Mayport and a ninth in San Diego, Calif.
