Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown joined local environmental officials today (Monday) to encourage local residents to participate in Saturday’s annual St. John’s River Cleanup.

This is the 18th year for the event, which encourages participants to  pick up litter from natural and urban areas.

From the Northbank Riverwalk, Brown said the St. Johns River is the heart of the city of Jacksonville.

The city has selected nine areas  around Jacksonville for cleanup this year.

The event runs from 8am to 11am.

Participants don’t have to register ahead of time, but volunteers must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by an adult.

All sites will have a captain with a sign-up sheet who will distribute event t-shirts and a ticket for food that can be redeemed at  the Riverside Arts Market.

Kevin Meerschaert has left WJCT for new pursuits. He was the producer of First Coast Connect until October of 2018.
