According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on any given day one in 25 hospitalized patients — 4 percent — is battling an infection picked up in a hospital or other healthcare facility.
That translates to more than 600,000 hospital patients each year. Roughly 74,000 of them have to fight more than one hospital-acquired infection, researchers found.
This week, Baptist Health will begin a major initiative aimed at reducing those numbers. The Jacksonville health system is the first in the world to adopt new uniforms for patients and staff that both repel fluids and are resistant to the transmission of infectious organisms.
Baptist Health CEO Hugh Greene and infectious disease expert Dr. Mobene Rathore joined Melissa Ross for more on the initiative.
