Next week a law will go into effect in Florida that prohibits texting while driving.
It will be a secondary offense, which means texting alone will not be enough to get you pulled over unless you’re also speeding or breaking another law.
The law does not prohibit use of cell phones for navigation, music, or calling or answering your phone.
Florida Highway Patrol public affairs officer Sgt. Dylan Bryan believes that this is a step in the right direction.
“This is Florida’s starting process, if you will, to kind of mirror what the other states have done nationally," he said.
"We have had additional states that have a more strict or broader driver distraction law. And again in Florida, this is the first step that we need to take. I’m very excited that the lawmakers have given the opportunity to do this.”
Florida is the 40th state to pass a texting and driving ban.
